The Issue

As a homeowner in East Rutherford, I deeply cherish the sense of community, security, and stability that thrives in our neighborhood. Recently, however, this cherished way of life is under threat due to calls to lift the ban on short-term rentals in our area. Currently, East Rutherford has in place a crucial ban on these short-term rentals, which I believe is essential in preserving the integrity and character of our community. Someone is trying to temporarily lift the ban so he can cash out during FIFA.

Short-term rentals often lead to a transient population, where day-to-day inhabitants change rapidly, undermining the close-knit atmosphere we value. With a revolving door of visitors, community members find it challenging to build trust, maintain lasting relationships, and ensure the safety of their homes and families. Numerous studies and articles have highlighted how neighborhoods experience increased noise, traffic, and even crime rates due to the constant flux of strangers that short-term rentals can bring.

Furthermore, short-term rentals can exacerbate housing instability and increase rental prices, making it harder for long-term residents to find affordable housing. A 2019 study from Urban Land Institute found that the presence of short-term rentals often inflates housing costs by reducing the availability of homes for renters who intend to settle long-term.

In East Rutherford, we have a proven strategy to maintain our homey environment — and it revolves around protecting local homeownership and discouraging transient lodging options. The existing ban on short-term rentals helps to achieve this goal, ensuring that our community remains a safe, attractive, and welcoming place for families and individuals who wish to plant roots here.

I urge the local council and planning authorities to prioritize the well-being and future of East Rutherford by upholding the current restrictions. This isn't just a matter of local ordinance; it's about preserving the identity and spirit of our beloved town. By keeping the short-term rental ban in place, we are securing the vibrancy and cohesion that makes East Rutherford distinct.
