The East Harlem community and concerned New York City citizens are petitioning to express our strong support for maintaining the operation of the Target store located in East Harlem. We believe that the closure of this establishment would have detrimental effects on the local economy and the livelihoods of many individuals who rely on it for their income and access to essential goods.

The East Harlem Target location serves as a vital economic engine for the community and provides employment for a diverse workforce. Its closure would not only impact Target employees but also have a ripple effect on Instacart shoppers, cab drivers, surrounding local businesses, and other service providers who rely on the foot traffic generated by Target to sustain their businesses.

The East Harlem Target is more than just a store; it has become vital to the community, offering access to a wide range of essential items at discounted rates. From home goods, toiletries, and clothes, to school and office supplies, and even food, this store plays a crucial role in ensuring that the community has affordable access to these necessary items. Furthermore, the closure will effect other connected local stores and spaces, which have become interwoven with our community's identity, are at risk of suffering economic hardship without Target as an anchor.

Our neighborhood has been disproportionately impacted by the economic challenges of the past few years, particularly during the pandemic, and the closure of this store will only exacerbate the struggles that many of our neighbors face. 

We acknowledge that theft and crime have been cited as reasons for potential closure, and we recognize that this issue is endemic and affects the community as a whole.  We implore government officials to address this concern in a comprehensive manner, working alongside Target, social service organizations, and local law enforcement agencies to implement effective solutions that ensure the safety and security of the community.

We understand the challenges that businesses face, and we are confident that by working together, the City Council and Target can find innovative solutions to address any concerns that may have led to the potential closure of the East Harlem location.

We urge you to consider the profound impact that the closure of this store would have on the East Harlem community and to work collaboratively with Target to explore alternative solutions that would allow it to continue serving the community.

We strongly believe that the decision to close Target without exploring alternative solutions represents a serious injustice to our community and are hopeful for a positive resolution that will benefit all parties involved.

We believe in the potential for growth and sustainability here, just as much as in wealthier neighborhoods. Our community deserves equitable access to the services and resources that more privileged neighborhoods enjoy. Closing Target only perpetuates the cycle of inequality, and it sends a message that our neighborhood is disposable

La comunidad de East Harlem y los ciudadanos conscientes de la ciudad de Nueva York presentamos esta solicitud para expresar nuestro apoyo fuerte para que se mantenga abierta la tienda de Target ubicada en East Harlem.
