The issue

I've lived on the Sunshine Coast all my life and have been a dedicated ratepayer and pet owner for many years. In recent years, I've watched in dismay as our local council's fees have skyrocketed beyond reasonable expectation, straining the financial stability of many individuals and families within our community. This year alone, our Council announced a sharp 10% increase in rates, dog registration fees have more than doubled, and tip fees are escalating at an alarming rate.

Such increases are not just fiscally unmanageable for many of us; they are unjust. Our community is built on principles of fairness and economic equity, yet we find ourselves burdened with fees increasing at a rate disproportionate to the Consumer Price Index (CPI). This contravenes the implicit understanding that council fees should align with the CPI, ensuring they remain fair and justified.

The Sunshine Coast is a region blessed with natural beauty and a strong sense of community. However, these drastic fee increases threaten our way of life, making it harder for families to make ends meet, for pet owners to fulfil their obligations responsibly, and for individuals to maintain their connection to this cherished community.

We propose that the Sunshine Coast Council cap annual increases in all council-related fees at a rate consistent with the CPI. This would provide a financially sustainable model that respects both the council's operational needs and the financial realities faced by its residents.

By keeping council fees within the CPI, we can protect the economic welfare of our community and preserve the vibrant, welcoming spirit that defines the Sunshine Coast.

Join me in urging the Sunshine Coast Council to take immediate action on this issue. Let's ensure fairness and economic equity by keeping council fees tied to the cost of living. Please sign this petition to support this important cause.
