The issue

Across Sydney's north shore, Willoughby Squash has been the home of indoor racquet sports for nearly 50 years. Tens of thousands of locals - from children to retirees, and everyone in between - have benefited from this amazing facility - with 10 courts, including the only doubles courts in all of Sydney. Now the facility is facing likely redevelopment and we need to find a new home for squash - and table tennis, badminton, and racquetball - as a matter of urgency.

Squash - and indoor racquet sports - are the only sporting facilities that local councils haven't supported with allocations of land on which to build facilities. As a result, across Sydney 88% of all squash courts have been lost to redevelopment. This includes multiple facilities in Lane Cove, North Sydney, Mosman, and elsewhere.

Without Willoughby Squash, the large (population: 350,000 and growing) and increasingly multicultural population from North Sydney to Wahroonga will have lost its last indoor racquet sports facility. This includes the growing table tennis club that has made its home at Willoughby over the last 15 years, run by Australian table tennis legend Vivian Tan, who competed in the London 2012 Olympics.

Not only are the courts a place for community recreation and school sport (with many of the local public and independent primary and high schools offering squash at WIlloughby), they are the home courts for some of Australia's top juniors and masters players. Willoughby Squash Club and its coaches have produced countless state and national junior champions.

Local council elections are just around the corner - on 14 September - and now is the time to let the councils of the North Shore - from North Sydney to Lane Cove, Willoughby and Ku-Ring-Gai - hear from the thousands of local residents who want to preserve such a valuable public amenity.

Please sign this petition to persuade the councils of the North Shore that they need to provide a permanent home for indoor racquet sports in Sydney's north. For the space of just one or two tennis courts, we can create an amazing facility that will keep residents active and happy throughout their lives.
