The Issue

Keep Short-Term Rentals Out of Libertyville’s Residential Neighborhoods

Petition to the Village of Libertyville Board of Trustees

Our Request

We, the undersigned residents of Libertyville, Illinois, respectfully request that the Village Board adopt zoning regulations prohibiting short-term rentals of fewer than 30 days in established residential neighborhoods.

Why This Matters

Libertyville is a community where families put down roots, neighbors build lasting relationships, and children grow up playing together in their backyards and neighborhood streets.

Our residential neighborhoods should remain places where residents can enjoy stability, privacy, safety, and a strong sense of community.

The increasing use of residential properties as short-term rentals through platforms such as Airbnb and VRBO raises concerns about:

Neighborhood safety and security: Frequent turnover of temporary guests creates uncertainty about who is occupying neighboring properties.
Quality of life: Noise, late-night gatherings, smoking, parking issues, and other disturbances can negatively affect permanent residents.
Accountability: Short-term guests may have little connection to the surrounding community, making it more difficult for neighbors to address recurring problems.
Neighborhood character: Residential neighborhoods should prioritize long-term housing and community relationships rather than transient accommodations.
Children and families: Our children deserve neighborhoods where they can play outdoors and where families feel comfortable and connected to their neighbors.
We Support Responsible Long-Term Rentals

This petition is not intended to discriminate against renters or visitors.

Long-term renters are valued members of our neighborhoods and contribute to the community.

We also recognize that short-term accommodations can serve a purpose in appropriately zoned areas of Libertyville.

Our concern is the operation of short-term lodging businesses within established residential neighborhoods.

What We Are Asking the Village Board to Do

We respectfully request that the Village of Libertyville:

Prohibit rentals of fewer than 30 days in residential zoning districts.
Establish clear enforcement procedures and penalties for violations.
Require property owners to comply with local zoning and rental regulations.
Protect the residential character, stability, and quality of life of Libertyville neighborhoods.
Our Community. Our Neighborhoods. Our Future.

Libertyville is not a resort town. It is a community built around families, schools, neighbors, and lasting relationships.

Our neighborhoods are where our children grow up—not vacation destinations.

We urge the Village Board to protect the character of Libertyville’s residential neighborhoods by adopting a prohibition on short-term rentals of fewer than 30 days.

Please sign this petition to show your support for protecting Libertyville’s residential neighborhoods.
