Keep Shell out of the Arctic Ocean and Prevent New Oil Drilling and Leasing

The Arctic is the world’s air conditioner. Its white ice reflects hot summer sun and keeps our climate stable. But it's also getting hotter twice as fast as the rest of the world. Arctic ice melt is hitting historic highs, devastating local inhabitants with flooding and making it harder for animals like polar bears, walrus and whales to find food.

Despite no proven technology for responding to an oil spill in Arctic waters, the Department of the Interior is considering offering new leases in America’s Arctic Ocean, and Shell just renewed their efforts to drill in 2014. Tell Secretary Jewell to protect the Arctic Ocean and not approve any new drilling or leasing.

Letter to
Secretary Jewell
America’s Arctic is ground zero for climate change. The indicators are everywhere: permafrost is melting, shorelines are washing away forcing communities to relocate and we’ve seen record low ice cover in the Arctic Ocean. To add insult to injury, Shell Oil and other oil companies want to begin drilling in the Arctic Ocean, which would release more CO2 emissions than all U.S. cars and light trucks will emit for the next 13 years.

Shell’s long list of setbacks and failures in the Arctic – coupled with the extreme risk for oil spills and further climate destruction in an already fragile ecosystem – provides overwhelming evidence that the oil and gas industry is not prepared to operate safely in the Arctic Ocean.

Secretary Jewell, please don’t allow Shell to drill in the Chukchi Sea in 2014 or beyond and please don't allow any new drilling or leasing in America's Arctic Ocean.
