Keep SAIL’s 8:15 - 3:15 School Schedule
The Issue
Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools has announced that beginning in August 2027, South Academy of International Languages (SAIL) will move from its current 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. schedule to 9:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
For many SAIL families, this change would create significant challenges that extend far beyond inconvenience. A 4:15 dismissal means many students may not arrive home until 5:00 p.m. or later. Students participating in clubs and other after school activities could be at school even later, leaving very little time for homework, dinner, family time, and an appropriate bedtime, particularly for our youngest K through 2 students.
The change also creates serious logistical challenges for working families. Parents have built childcare arrangements, work schedules, transportation plans, and extracurricular activities around the existing school day. Some families have already expressed concern that a 4:15 dismissal may be so difficult to accommodate that they would have to reconsider whether their children can remain at SAIL.
This concern is particularly significant at SAIL because it is a language immersion school. Unlike a traditional school where enrollment losses may be more easily offset by students entering at later grade levels, students generally cannot simply enter SAIL's immersion program at any grade without the necessary language proficiency. After kindergarten, prospective students must demonstrate the appropriate language ability to enter the program. This means that if families leave SAIL because the new schedule is no longer workable for them, replacing those students may become increasingly difficult as grade levels progress. Over time, the loss of existing students could therefore have broader implications for enrollment and the strength of SAIL's language immersion programs.
We understand that CMS is facing real transportation challenges and is working to improve bus reliability, driver availability, and route efficiency. However, we are asking CMS to consider whether those goals can be accomplished without moving SAIL's school day one full hour later.
We respectfully ask Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools to reconsider the proposed 9:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. schedule for SAIL and maintain the current 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. schedule for the 2027 to 2028 school year.
We also ask CMS to provide SAIL families with an opportunity to give meaningful feedback before the schedule is finalized and to explain what transportation alternatives were considered before determining that SAIL should move to the later schedule.
SAIL families value our school tremendously. Our goal is to work collaboratively with CMS and school leadership to find a solution that supports reliable transportation while also considering the significant impact this change would have on students and families.
