The Issue

As someone who drives Ryan Road East in Comox, BC, multiple times a day, I've witnessed first-hand the hazards posed by drivers travelling well below the posted speed limit of 80 km/h. This stretch of road, crucial for daily commutes and transportation, can be dangerous when drivers fail to maintain a safe and consistent speed.

The road is plagued with drivers, often octogenarians and the generally unaware, leisurely driving as slow as 50 km/h. This not only disrupts the flow of traffic but also increases the risk of accidents. It is essential for the safety of all road users that the current speed limit of 80 km/h is preserved, and that law enforcement increases their efforts to maintain order on this critical road.

Data from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia highlights that variability in speed significantly increases the risk of collisions. Roads that see consistent speed, with minimal deviations, tend to have lower accident rates. Reckless slower driving can lead to dangerous overtaking maneuvers, frustration among drivers, and potential traffic accidents.

The RCMP or Military Police must be more present on this stretch of road, ensuring that the 80 km/h speed limit is adhered to by all drivers. Through improved enforcement, we can combat this issue effectively without resorting to lowering the speed limit, an action that would only serve to punish cautious drivers rather than solve the problem.

Your support for this petition will push local authorities to take immediate and effective action, ensuring the safety and efficiency of Ryan Road East. Please sign this petition to help maintain the speed limit and enhance enforcement efforts.
