Keep Queens United Middle School (QUMS) a 6-8th Grade School - DO NOT MERGE with PS 156Q!

Keep Queens United Middle School (QUMS) a 6-8th Grade School - DO NOT MERGE with PS 156Q!

The Issue

District 29 is considering merging QUMS and PS 156Q (which is in the same building) as a K-8 school. This will obviously change the dynamic of both schools. Current families that attend QUMS and potential incoming families applying to the school want it to remain a 6-8 school. QUMS is one of the very few middle schools in our community which is smaller and have a lot of what families are looking for in a middle school.

If this change takes place, this means that one of the things that makes the school desirable is the smaller school size for 6-8 grades. This also means that QUMS will no longer have Principal Francis as its building leader because she has less seniority than the building leader in PS 156Q. Since Principal Francis has been in leadership she has turned the school around to make it a middle school that families desire to attend and it would be a tragedy to loose this. With a merger, we do not know how current programs will be affected and there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding everything.

It is imperative that we act now and voice our dislike as parents/guardians, students, community leaders, etc. of this decision to merge the two schools and fight to keep QUMS as a stand alone middle school before the 2025-2026 school year.

By signing and sharing this petition, we are asking the District to reverse their decision and KEEP QUMS a STAND ALONE MIDDLE SCHOOL!
