Keep Pruneyard Cinemas Thriving
The Issue
To: Supporters of Pruneyard Cinemas, Cedar Room and the Campbell Community
Pruneyard Cinemas and Cedar Room has been a cornerstone of entertainment and culture in the Campbell community, bringing joy through movies, live music, comedy nights, and unique culinary cinema experiences. However, our future is in jeopardy due to an unmanageable lease agreement with our landlord, Regency Centers.
Why We Need Your Help:
Pandemic Impact: The COVID-19 pandemic severely affected the film industry, leading to theater closures and significant revenue declines.
Industry Struggles: Recent strikes by the Screen Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild have further disrupted film production, reducing the availability of new content.
High Lease Costs: Our lease terms are disproportionately high compared to similar cinemas, worsened by a recent increase, due to an increase in property taxes following the sale of Pruneyard Shopping Center to Regency Centers in 2019, but not charged to us until January 2024. Despite these challenges, we have innovated and adapted:
Alternative Entertainment: We introduced comedy nights, live music, and culinary cinema, and Queen Bingo to Cedar Room have become a beloved form of live entertainment in the South Bay, all helping us create new non-film revenues.
The Current Situation: We have tried to negotiate modest adjustments to our lease with Regency Centers, but they have refused to cooperate. These adjustments from Regency Centers are necessary for our long-term sustainability.
