I’ve started this petition with the support of our maternity team to advocate for dedicated, affordable and family-friendly maternity accommodation in Port Hedland for pregnant women who are required to leave Newman and surrounding communities to give birth.

For some women, relocating for birth means spending weeks away from home — and potentially away from their children, partner, family, community and cultural supports.

This is about more than accommodation. It is about equitable access to maternity care for rural and remote women.

Where our health system requires a pregnant woman to leave her community to safely deliver her baby, she should have access to safe, affordable and family-appropriate accommodation. It’s costing families thousands of dollars at what should be a joyous occasion putting extra stress.
