An Open Letter to Sony Interactive Entertainment

Protect Consumer Choice, Game Ownership and PlayStation's Legacy

We, the players, collectors, developers, content creators, industry professionals, and fans of the PlayStation brand around the world, respectfully ask Sony Interactive Entertainment to reconsider its recent decisions to discontinue physical media production for new PlayStation console releases starting in January 2028 and to phase out the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

We recognize that the video game industry has evolved and that digital distribution now represents a significant portion of the market. We also understand the technical, financial, and operational challenges involved in maintaining online services and producing physical media in a rapidly changing industry.

However, we firmly believe that innovation and preservation can, and should, coexist.

These decisions affect far more than the way games are distributed. They directly impact consumer choice, game ownership, video game preservation, and the legacy that millions of players have helped build throughout more than three decades of PlayStation history.

Physical games remain much more than discs. They provide ownership, collectability, preservation, resale, lending, accessibility for players with limited internet access, and long-term availability independent of online services.

Likewise, digital storefronts for legacy consoles play an essential role in preserving gaming history. While continued access to previously purchased content is appreciated, it does not fully address the long-term concerns surrounding preservation and permanent access to digital libraries.

This letter is not an argument against digital distribution. We recognize its convenience, innovation, and importance for the future of gaming.

Our request is simply that embracing a digital future should not require eliminating the alternatives that continue to matter to millions of players worldwide.

We respectfully ask Sony to consider:

  • Keeping physical editions available for major PlayStation releases, even through limited runs, collector's editions, or print-on-demand initiatives.
  • Continuing to offer physical editions for collectors and consumers who prefer owning their games.
  • Providing transparent and long-term guarantees that purchased digital games will remain accessible.
  • Expanding investments in game preservation, backward compatibility, and long-term access to the PlayStation legacy.
  • Maintaining an open dialogue with the community before implementing permanent changes that affect millions of consumers.

History has shown that listening to the community strengthens the relationship between PlayStation and its players. In 2021, the global response from fans led Sony to reverse its decision to close the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, demonstrating that constructive dialogue can lead to solutions that benefit everyone.

PlayStation became one of the most influential brands in gaming because of the trust and passion of its community. Preserving that relationship means not only embracing technological progress but also respecting the history and values that made PlayStation a symbol of gaming for generations.

This letter is not about resisting change.

It is about preserving consumer choice, protecting game ownership, safeguarding gaming history, and ensuring that future generations can continue to experience the legacy of PlayStation.

If you believe these values deserve to remain part of PlayStation's future, please sign this petition and share it with others.

Together, we can show that innovation and preservation belong side by side.
