Students should be allowed to keep their phones on them during school. There have been multiple situations where students knew what was happening while their parents had no idea because the school failed to communicate important information. We understand that phones can be distracting, but immediately giving students detention for having them, without even a warning, feels unnecessary. Good students are getting in trouble over one mistake when simply being told to put their phone away would be enough. If the school wants students to be ahead of the students, they should know it's never going to work. We aren’t asking to use our phones all day. The school is also banning Apple Watches, even though many students mainly use them as a fitness tracker or simply to tell the time. Not every device is being used to get around school rules or distract students. We just want to be able to keep them on us in case we need to communicate with our families, especially when the school isn’t doing so. Do better Deptford.
