Keep Peter Hingston Behind Bars

The Issue

Peter Hingston should never see the light of day long enough to abuse another child. We have until July 25th to make sure of it.

Hingston has done immeasurable harm to the lives of countless innocent children, their families, and the City Honors community. We've stomached the documents detailing his offenses - we know about his crimes against humanity. But how many more went unreported over half a century of sexual abuse? We can never truly know, but now we have the opportunity to demand justice for the known victims of Hingston's abuse.

The wickedness of these offenses undoubtedly meets the requirements for the federal sentencing guidelines brought by the prosecution, which would put Hingston in prison for 15-20 years. Anything less would be an insult to the victims -- especially the defense's recommendation of a measly 7 years for innumerable instances of outright and documented child abuse. Hingston clearly did what he did for so long because he didn’t get caught. What reason do we have to believe he wouldn’t have continued to abuse children at City Honors every day for the rest of his career if the authorities hadn’t shown up?

As a City Honors graduate who first walked into Hingston's classroom in 2015, I unknowingly walked past his victims in the halls every day. I cannot stand idly by and witness a miscarriage of justice after the individual and collective trauma he has inflicted upon a generation of children in Buffalo. Every member of the City Honors community, current and former students, parents, or whomever else has a responsibility to speak up and demand justice.

Now that Hingston finally faces the law, he claims he’s a sick man who cares about his students. Just as he ruthlessly manipulated countless children throughout his life, he is trying to manipulate the court into issuing a softer sentence for his crimes. Judge Arcara, I’m asking you on the behalf of the City Honors community to call his bluff.

This petition is in regards to the case of United States v. Peter C. Hingston (1:20-cr-00019) scheduled for sentencing at 11:00am on 7/25/22.

A list of signers will be emailed to the prosecution before the sentencing next week. In addition to signing, I encourage you to send personal statements to michael.digiacomo@usdoj.gov or mail them to Hon. Richard J. Arcara, United States District Judge, 2 Niagara Square, Buffalo NY 14202.
