Help Keep Parkdale Affordable: Protect Our Community

Parkdale is a diverse and welcoming neighbourhood in Toronto where many families, seniors, newcomers, and people with lower incomes call home. Unfortunately, rising rent prices and gentrification are making it harder for people to continue living in the neighbourhood. Many long-term residents are struggling to keep up with housing costs and are at risk of having to leave the community they have called home for years.

Having access to safe and affordable housing is something everyone should have. When people are forced to move because they can no longer afford their rent, it doesn’t just affect them individually. It can also mean leaving behind friends, neighbours, support systems, and a community they have been part of for a long time. Parkdale has a lot of diversity and a strong sense of community, and it is important that residents are given the opportunity to stay in the neighbourhood.

We believe more needs to be done to protect affordable housing in Parkdale. We are asking Toronto City Council to put more funding towards preserving existing rental buildings by supporting nonprofit housing organizations. This would help keep more buildings affordable and give current residents a better chance of staying in their homes.

We are asking Toronto City Council to:

1. Provide more funding and support to nonprofit organizations that want to purchase and maintain existing rental buildings.
2. Improve tenant protections to help prevent unfair evictions and unreasonable rent increases.
3. Work together with local community organizations and housing providers to find ways to keep housing affordable for Parkdale residents.

Affordable housing is about more than just having somewhere to live. It is about feeling safe, having stability, and being able to stay connected to the people and community around you. People should not have to leave their neighbourhood simply because they can no longer afford to live there.

We are asking community members to come together and support this cause. By signing this petition, you are helping bring attention to the importance of affordable housing and the need to protect Parkdale residents. Let’s work together to keep Parkdale a welcoming and affordable community where people can continue to live, grow, and feel at home.
