The Issue

September 2024

Dear Bristol City Council committee,

About us

We are a group of residents who care about our street and would like to improve the local environment by making the space safer, cleaner, greener, and more pleasant for all residents.

About Bishopthorpe Road for action

Currently the area in front of the shops (no. 40-46) is neglected and creates a health and safety hazard for the following reasons:

•  The wide pavement has potholes and is broken and not safe for pedestrians, especially for vulnerable residents.

•  Cars are parked in a disorganised manner on the pavement, which makes it unsafe for pedestrians to access the shops. Two of the cars are classified as SORN and are parked on the pavement for few years despite the reports to DVLA (photos attached).

•  There is a lack of public litter bins. There is one small bin however this is often overflowing with rubbish.

•  It is used as a fly-tipping space, including rubbish and furniture. The lack of enforcement of the fly-tipping law by the city council creates a health and safety hazard.

* We are also concerned with regard to flytipping in particular in all the following areas of the estate: Rodbourne Road, Maskelyne Avenue, top of Tilling Road, the Childrens' Park and the local laneways between Maskelyne and Bishop Manor Road - which have become a hotspot for the dumping of TVs, chairs, tables, sofas and  bags of personal items

We are calling for :

1.    The pavement area in front of the shops to be resurfaced.

2.    Improved provision of waste bins.

3.    Signage to be erected to address fly-tipping.

4.    Arranged marked parking bays on the asphalt area.

5.    The installation of large wooden pots, trees, planters to improve the local environment.

6.    The installation of a speed bump in front of the shops to enforce the 20mph speed limit.

These changes will significantly improve the wellbeing of the local community, as well as complementing the new homes nearing completion that are located on the opposite side of the road.

Please see photos and our signatures below,

Yours sincerely,
