The Issue

Children, families, residents, and visitors walk throughout Bedford Village—shopping, visiting restaurants, and experiencing our quaint, historic hamlet. On warm fall, spring, and summer afternoons, students walk from Bedford Village Elementary School, and older students regularly walk from school into the Village after dismissal to visit the Bedford Free Library, the Village Green, local businesses, and other community destinations.

We are asking the Town of Bedford to provide a crossing guard in the Court Road/Old Post Road area during peak school pedestrian hours, approximately 8:00–9:00 a.m. and 3:00–4:00 p.m. on school days. Families, community members, and business owners have raised ongoing concerns about children navigating traffic in this area, including repeated reports of vehicles traveling the wrong way on Court Road.

The Town previously evaluated pedestrian traffic in the area and determined that the observed volume did not justify the resources required for a daily crossing guard. We appreciate that the Town considered the request. However, that evaluation occurred during the winter, and families have observed considerably more student pedestrian activity during warmer fall and spring school days. We believe the intersection should be reassessed under conditions that more accurately reflect periods of greater school-related pedestrian activity.

ACTION

We respectfully ask the Town of Bedford and the Bedford Police Department to conduct a new assessment during representative fall school days and reconsider providing a crossing guard during the morning arrival and afternoon dismissal periods.

This is a focused request to make the connection between BVES and the surrounding Bedford Village community safer for children and families. We welcome the support of BVES families, Bedford residents, local business owners and employees, and others who regularly walk, drive, or work in the Village.

Please sign to show your support for this request. If you are comfortable doing so, please also leave a comment identifying your connection to the community (e.g., BVES parent or caregiver, Bedford resident, Bedford Village business owner or employee, or frequent pedestrian in the Village).
