The Issue

We call on Ottawa City Council to work with the Ottawa Gymnastics Centre (OGC) to secure a long-term facility solution that preserves access to affordable gymnastics for children, youth, and families in central Ottawa.

Why This Matters
For more than 65 years, OGC has provided recreational and competitive gymnastics opportunities to Ottawa families. Today, it serves more than 2,500 member families, many of whom live in Ottawa's urban core.

The City of Ottawa has advised OGC that its facility at 294 Elmgrove Avenue has been designated "end-of-life" and that its tenancy cannot continue beyond June 30, 2027. To date, no detailed rationale or long-term plan for the facility has been provided.

Losing OGC's central location without a suitable replacement would make access to gymnastics more difficult for thousands of children and youth, potentially requiring longer travel times and reducing affordable sport opportunities in central Ottawa.

The challenge is made more urgent by OGC's specialized facility requirements and the limited availability of suitable space in Ottawa's urban core. In 2023, OGC also invested more than $400,000 in facility improvements, underscoring its long-term commitment to serving the community.

We Call on Ottawa City Council To:

  • Explore all viable options for OGC to remain at 294 Elmgrove Avenue, including a lease extension if continued occupancy is feasible.
  • Work collaboratively with OGC to identify and pursue a suitable replacement facility in central Ottawa if remaining at Elmgrove is not possible.
  • Use available planning, zoning, property, and partnership tools to support a sustainable long-term solution.
  • Establish a clear path forward well before June 30, 2027, to minimize disruption to programs and families.
  • OGC is a longstanding community resource that helps thousands of children and youth stay active, build confidence, and develop lifelong skills. We urge the City to work collaboratively with OGC to protect its future and ensure that affordable gymnastics remains accessible in central Ottawa.
