Keep office hours after the first block period
The Issue
As a student at University High School, I am deeply concerned about the proposed changes to our office hours. The administration is considering moving these crucial hours from their current slot after the first block period (period 1 or 2) to a later time after the third block period (period 5 or 6). This change would have a significant impact on my education and wellbeing, as well as that of my fellow students.
The majority of students prefer office hours to be held in the morning immediately following the first block. After this period, we are still fresh and filled with energy, which allows us to absorb information and seek help more effectively. By moving them to a later time, the administration disregards the natural energy peaks most of us experience, when we are more attentive and ready to engage in constructive learning.
Moreover, this change creates logistical problems for students who have an open 5th or 6th period. Currently, these students can attend office hours without having to make an additional trip to school, which helps them save on transportation costs and maximizes their productivity. Changing the timing means they would either have to unnecessarily wait at school, leading to wasted time, or they would have to waste gas by leaving and then returning for office hours.
Personally, I find this change troubling because I am mentally exhausted after the 6th period. The later office hours would significantly reduce my ability to concentrate and effectively utilize the support that these hours are meant to provide. It wouldn't just be my energy level affected—countless students would be less productive, ultimately weakening the learning environment.
I urge the school administration to reconsider their plans and keep the office hours after the first block period. This would benefit the student body by aligning with our natural energy cycles and preserving the accessibility and effectiveness of this vital educational resource.
