The Issue

Growing up in the serene landscapes of Nova Scotia, I have always cherished the pristine air and clear waters of our beautiful province. Our community, known for its stunning natural environment, is more than just a place to live; it's a haven that fosters life and nurtures our well-being. However, the increasing interest in establishing large-scale data centers on our soil poses an unprecedented threat to the very essence of our land.

Data centers, often celebrated for their role in our digital economy, consume massive amounts of energy and water resources. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, data centers use about 2% of the total electricity consumption in the United States, a figure that's continually climbing with the expansion of digital services. In Nova Scotia, such demands could strain our local resources, risking contamination and depletion of our water supplies, and increasing carbon emissions, which contribute to climate change.

The environmental impact data centers have is undeniable. The cooling systems required for the servers use significant quantities of water, potentially affecting local ecosystems. The heavy reliance on electricity not only leads to higher emissions but could also result in the expansion of unrenewable energy sources such as fossil fuels in our area. This scenario contrasts sharply with our province's commitment to sustainability and our own responsibility to future generations.

We take pride in Nova Scotia's commitment to green energy and conservation efforts. Permitting the establishment of data centers here contradicts the values and practices we've strived to uphold. We should instead look towards bolstering our reputation as leaders in sustainable development, focusing on renewable energy projects and promoting technological advancements that respect our environment.

I urge our local government to reconsider any plans to develop data centers in our province. It's vital that they assess the long-term environmental costs these projects would incur, prioritizing the health and future of Nova Scotia's natural landscapes over short-term economic gains.

Let's come together to ensure our priorities remain clear. Nova Scotia's natural beauty and resources are irreplaceable and must be protected for us and for the generations to come.
