UPDATE:  On May 4th, Ning officially announced the new direction of their service and outlined the available options.  I'm excited to inform you that Ning has found a sponsor to keep a basic level of service available for free to K-12 educators.  They were also able to keep this level of service (Ning Mini) relatively affordable for nonprofit organizations at $2.95/mo. or $19.95/yr.

While I have mixed feelings about Mini's limitations and wish that Ning could have found a sponsor for the entire nonprofit sector, I applaud their efforts and hope that this limited victory will have a positive overall impact.

Please take a moment to review all of these changes and share your thoughts with Ning at the Ning Blog .

Thanks to those who took the time to sign the petition and pass it along to others.  I deeply appreciate all of your support.

On April 15, 2010, Ning.com announced that it will be phasing out their free service and focus on paid Premium Services.  They stated that "existing free networks will have the opportunity to either convert to paying for premium services, or transition off of Ning."

Since its launch in early 2007, the nonprofit and educational community have embraced Ning and been some of its most avid supporters.  We have grown our networks and expanded our reach through the tools that have been made available through this platform, and brought together those in our community who are united by a common mission.

At a time when funding is scarce and organizations are fighting to keep their doors open, it is critical that these online support communities be allowed to continue without additional financial burdens.

Letter to
Co-founder and Chairman of the Board, Ning.com Marc Andreesen
CEO, Ning.com Jason Rosenthal
We, the nonprofit and educational community, urge you to make an exception in your plans to discontinue free Ning services. Since your founding in early 2007, we have been avid supporters of Ning.com and embraced your services as a critical component in accomplishing our missions. We've used Ning.com to unite diverse populations, inform individuals, confront difficult issues, and bring hope to those who need it most. For many of us, Ning.com has helped to bridge the communication gap between our organization and those we serve.

We understand that times like these often necessitate making tough decisions, and appreciate the situation that you're in. However, we hope that you will consider the important role that Ning.com plays in the nonprofit and educational communities and allow us to continue using your free service to provide for those in need.

At a time when funding is scarce and organizations are fighting to keep their doors open, it is critical that these online support communities be allowed to continue without additional financial burdens. Please, be exceptional, and help the nonprofit and educational community at a time when we need it most.

Sincerely,
