Many states have already passed bills like the proposed New Jersey Indian Child Welfare Act. They include California, Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming --- and counting.

The continuity of Native American culture and the mental health of Native children depends on state-level legislation that preserves the principles of the federal Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978.
