Keep Music Therapy as a Funded Support in the NDIS

The issue

People with disability are about to suffer a lack of healthcare service given imminent changes to the NDIS.  As of Monday 2 December, the NDIS will remove music therapy from the funded therapeutic supports in the scheme. This decision, made without consultation with the Australian Music Therapy Association, will impact thousands of NDIS participants who heavily rely on music therapy. Other therapy services are already overloaded and have waitlists. Removing music therapy will make access to vital therapeutic supports even harder for people accessing the NDIS scheme. For some people, music therapy is the only therapy that supports improvement in their health, functioning and wellbeing.  We know from our evidence base and reports from people accessing the therapy that music therapy specifically improves communication, emotional wellbeing, physical mobility, cognitive capacity and social connection with others.   This decision is likely to significantly impact lives and has been made with little notice leaving people accessing the NDIS scheme without any alternative options for their healthcare. 900+ music therapists offer music therapy to people in the NDIS.  Thousands of people access music therapy to enhance their health, functioning and wellbeing.  Help keep music therapy in the NDIS.  Sign our petition.
