The Issue

It is incredibly frustrating to watch our local transit system slowly get chipped away while we are just trying to get to work, run errands, and live our lives. For those of us in Glendale and across the North Shore, the devastating cuts have already hit home. We’ve watched helplessly as Route 80 service was chopped off north of Florist, completely isolating commuters and workers who rely on that northern stretch. We’ve seen Route 12 have its vital service hours slashed, and we've felt the financial sting of fares being hiked by over 37% to $2.75. What used to be straightforward, predictable daily commutes have been transformed into stressful, time-consuming, and expensive ordeals. But instead of fighting to fix what is broken, Milwaukee County is preparing to completely dismantle the system. MCTS has recently proposed an absolutely catastrophic 25% structural cut to service hours beginning in 2027. To put that number into perspective, when New York City’s massive MTA faced its infamous, historic "Doomsday" budget crisis in 2010, the resulting cuts only amounted to a 2% to 4% reduction in overall service. What Milwaukee County is proposing is six to twelve times worse than NYC's Doomsday cuts. If our leaders allow a 25% cut to go through, it will trigger an unstoppable transit death spiral: Transit Deserts: Entire neighborhoods will be permanently cut off from the grid, leaving riders who can't drive with absolutely no way to travel. Extreme Crowding & Long Waits: Surviving routes will become dangerously overcrowded, with "standing room only" buses making commutes miserable and unsafe. Wait times will skyrocket, turning a simple trip to the grocery store or campus into a multi-hour commitment. Economic Devastation: Thousands of working-class residents will lose their only reliable lifeline to get to their jobs, schools, and medical appointments, choking Milwaukee County's workforce. We pay our fares, we pay our taxes, and we rely on these buses every single day, yet daily riders are constantly treated like an afterthought. Public transit is not a luxury; it is a basic human right and an essential utility for working families, students, and seniors across Milwaukee County. "Right-sizing" is just a polite word for managing the systematic decline of our community. If our county leaders keep choosing to shrink the system instead of fighting for dedicated, sustainable state funding, they are choosing to leave thousands of people completely stranded. We, the undersigned riders and residents of Milwaukee County, demand that our elected County Supervisors and state leaders: Stop the proposed 25% service cuts slated for 2027. Fully fund MCTS by securing a dedicated local funding source to end the structural budget deficits. Restore vital local lines, including Route 80 service north of Florist and robust frequency across the county grid. We deserve a transit system that actually works for the people who keep this county running. Sign this petition today to tell the Milwaukee County Board: No more cuts!
