LEARN Charter Schools have proudly served North Chicago families since 2012, providing a safe, supportive school environment and strong academic foundation. More than 800 local students attend LEARN 6 and LEARN 10 -- one out of every three public elementary students in the community -- and we still have a waitlist of more than 100 students. 

Families choose LEARN because students thrive there. Children at LEARN 6 and LEARN 10 are: 

• 3x more likely to be proficient in reading than their peers at D187 schools.
• 4x more likely to be proficient in math than their peers at D187 schools. 
• On track to earn college degrees at 2x the rate of their peers nationwide. 

These schools are working. They are needed. They are loved. 

Yet despite strong results, community support, and a recent seven-year charter renewal voted on by the District 187 Independent Authority, district leadership voted to close LEARN 6 and LEARN 10 at the end of the 2026-2027 school year if they fail to reach fair terms on a new charter agreement. This vote was taken without notifying families or offering a public voice in the decision, and LEARN is confident this vote is without legal merit.

Now, LEARN and District 187 will enter mediation to finalize a fair charter agreement. We call on the District 187 leadership, including the Independent Authority (IA) and Financial Oversight Panel (FOP), Illinois state leaders, including the Illinois State Board of Education, and community leaders to: 

Support a fair, fully funded charter agreement that keeps LEARN 6 and LEARN 10 open and stable for students. 

North Chicago families should not be forced to fight for the right to attend a high-quality public school. No child should lose access to a great education because of broken governance. 

We are speaking up for our kids. 

We are showing up for our schools. 

We are asking you to stand with us. 

Protect LEARN schools. Protect families' school options in North Chicago. Protect student success.

Las familias eligen LEARN porque los estudiantes prosperan aquí. Los niños en LEARN 6 y LEARN 10:

• Tienen 3 veces más probabilidades de ser competentes en lectura que sus compañeros de las escuelas del D187.
• Tienen 4 veces más probabilidades de ser competentes en matemáticas que sus compañeros del D187.

Sin embargo, a pesar de los sólidos resultados, el apoyo comunitario y una reciente renovación de charter por siete años aprobada por la Autoridad Independiente del Distrito 187, el liderazgo del distrito votó para cerrar LEARN 6 y LEARN 10 al final del año escolar 2026–2027 si no se llegan a términos justos sobre un nuevo acuerdo de charter. Esta votación se realizó sin notificar a las familias ni ofrecer una oportunidad de participación pública, y LEARN está seguro de que esta decisión no tiene mérito legal.

Ahora, LEARN y el Distrito 187 entrarán en mediación para finalizar un acuerdo de charter justo.
