Keep Kindergarten Class Sizes Small in Bloomfield Hills Elementary Schools
Keep Kindergarten Class Sizes Small in Bloomfield Hills Elementary Schools
The Issue
We’re asking Bloomfield Hills Public Schools to take a proactive, research-informed approach to kindergarten class sizes and elementary classroom support.
Our three asks are simple:
1. Add a 4th Kindergarten Section at Conant
Reevaluate current kindergarten enrollment and staffing and add an additional section to bring class sizes down substantially below the district’s contractual maximum of 26 students.
2. Provide Full-Time, Dedicated Para Support if Class Sizes Cannot Be Reduced
If it is no longer possible to add a kindergarten section this school year, provide a full-time, dedicated paraprofessional in every Conant kindergarten classroom to ensure teachers and students have the support they need.
3. In all Bloomfield Hills Elementary Schools Establish and Maintain Research-Informed Class-Size Standards
We are asking the Superintendent and Board of Education to establish transparent, research-informed class-size targets for K-5 that remain meaningfully below contractual maximums, with particular consideration given to smaller class sizes in the early elementary grades where research shows the strongest benefits from class-size reduction.
This should include:
- Clear district-wide class-size targets for each elementary grade, rather than treating contractual maximums as the goal.
- For kindergarten specifically, establish a target of 18 students per classroom, with enrollment not exceeding 20 students per classroom before triggering the addition of another section.
- Transparent enrollment thresholds that trigger consideration of an additional classroom section, well below contractual maximums.
- Proactive planning for enrollment increases before classrooms reach contractual maximums.
- Public communication about how class-size and staffing decisions are made and the educational rationale behind those decisions.
- A commitment to treating contractual maximums as guardrails, not targets.
Why This Matters
Kindergarten is a critical transition into elementary school. Our youngest students are learning academics, classroom routines, independence, social skills, and emotional regulation all at the same time.
We believe they deserve classrooms where teachers have the capacity to know and support each child individually.
You can find a more in depth look at the research and current situation at Conant HERE.
We are asking our Superintendent and Board of Education to make that a priority, both for the kindergarten students in our classrooms today and for the elementary students who will follow them.
If you agree that Bloomfield Hills kindergarten students deserve smaller classes and meaningful classroom support, please sign this petition.
