Keep J.M.W. School independent from larger school merger
The Issue
I had the privilege of attending J.M.W Performing and Visual Arts School, a unique institution that provides a nurturing environment completely unlike any other public school. At J.M.W., I found acceptance and a sense of belonging that had eluded me in many other educational settings. This school not only honored the memory of a cherished member of the Pawtucket School Department but was a haven for students like me, offering a space where we could thrive in our creativity and individuality.
Now, this institution faces an uncertain future with proposals threatening to merge it into larger high schools. Such a move would dismantle the distinct community and personalized approach that J.M.W. embodies. The merger would erase the legacy of the individual it memorializes and strip current and future students of a vital space where they feel understood and accepted.
It is crucial that J.M.W. remains an independent entity. Merging it with larger schools will dilute the specialized programs that have been tailored to nurture the unique talents of its students. The school's dedicated focus on performing and visual arts provides students with opportunities to explore their creativity in a way that a generalized curriculum cannot match.
Statistically, specialized schools like J.M.W. lead to higher student satisfaction and academic performance. According to the National Endowment for the Arts, students who have access to arts education are more likely to excel not just in the arts but also in other academic areas. By keeping J.M.W. open and independent, we ensure the continuation of these benefits and maintain a vibrant educational community in Pawtucket.
We call on the Pawtucket School Department and local decision-makers to preserve J.M.W. as its own school. We ask you to acknowledge the unique contributions this institution makes to our community and to honour its legacy. Please sign this petition to keep J.M.W. Performing and Visual Arts School a standalone institution, preserving its invaluable role in fostering creativity and community spirit.
