We must save Italian at New Britain High School (CT)!
Sign this petition to tell New Britain School District to keep the Italian Language and Culture Program at the High School (NBHS)! Recently, the school district decided to eliminate Italian as one of the languages that students can choose to study at NBHS. We believe that this is the wrong decision for many reasons.
The Italian program at NBHS is thriving with full classes including the Italian 4 Early College Experience (ECE) through the University of Connecticut - a course that provides opportunities for high school students to take college courses while still in high school. Given the interest of the students and the success of the Italian program, we do not see any possible justification for this decision.
The Italian-American community is the second largest in Central Connecticut and its heritage is a fundamental part of the regional culture. Eliminating Italian would jeopardize the connection between education and the desire of a large part of the community to keep its roots alive.
Italian Language and Culture is not only crucial to the Humanities curriculum, it also plays a fundamental role in the STEM fields. The United States of America imports 37% of its engineering and computer science from Italy, while fashion, food and wine, and automobiles are imported at roughly 8-9% each. Therefore, the economic relationship between the United States and Italy is noteworthy, and having a knowledge of Italian can and will open doors for our students in the future, in the form of internships and even job opportunities.
Finally, offering fewer languages means less diversity within a school or a district and leaves students lacking distinctive linguistic and cultural competences. In this globalized world, schools must provide the opportunity to engage in a learning environment that fosters intercultural competence. An access to Italian in high school enhances a student’s college prospects and opens paths for a wider range of college-level fields of study.
