Amherst, Massachusetts, is a town celebrated for its diversity and sense of inclusivity, especially within the surrounding college communities.  The presence of ICE agents here in Amherst is a threat that is constantly looming. Students who expect to be safe coming to class fear for their lives at the hands of this administration. The nature of ICE agents jeopardizes the bonds we've forged as a community, and instills fear and anxiety into a town otherwise thriving on diversity, inclusivity, and learning. 

Imagine facing school courses with the threat of possible detention and deportation weighing on your shoulders. Imagine not knowing if your place of employment is safe for you to be authentic. To wonder if you'll make it home from school, or if your dad will get stopped on his way to his shift. To be afraid constantly that your life as you know it, will be pulled out from under you. This has become the reality of countless students and residents across the United States. 

Amherst is meant to be our sanctuary, a refuge for students and families who contribute richly to its cultural and economic tapestry. To safeguard these values, it's crucial that we demand a firm stance against the presence of ICE in our town. Amherst and it's governing body must do its duty to uphold the values of its community members, and protect us against blatant hate and discrimination enforced by ICE agents.

It has been proven by the American Immigration Council that areas that distance themselves from ICE have stronger community relations and lower crime rates. This disproves the myth that enforcement equates to safety. We have witnessed what this enforcement looks like in its extremes, and have felt the burden and weight of excessive force. Allowing the presence of ICE in our neighborhoods would not only disrupt lives, but would erode the trust and safety that have become hallmarks of our community.

Our objective is to appeal to local leaders and legislative bodies to enact policies that prohibit ICE operations within Amherst. This involves cooperation with local law enforcement to ensure they do not collaborate with ICE, upholding our commitment to protect our neighbors and reinforce our collective strength.
