Keep Highway N on Track: Safer Now, Fair on Land, Done on Time
The Issue
The Highway N corridor in western St. Charles County is still a two-lane road — one lane each direction — with more than 1,700 new homes platted along it, including the 896-home Harvest at Hopewell and the ~300-home Villages at Post Farms. Hundreds of those homes are already occupied; the rest are coming.
We are residents who live on and around Highway N, and we'll start with credit where it's due: the widening is funded and on its way. It's in the state's five-year road plan. The design work is done and paid for. Money to buy the land the wider road needs is set aside for 2027, and the building money for 2028, with new lanes targeted for around 2029.
We support this project and the officials building it. We're signing because how the next three years go matters as much as whether it gets built. We respectfully ask:
1. Make the road safer now. The traffic light promised for the Hopewell/Duello intersection in 2026 still isn't in. Deliver it. Keep signals timed as new ones come online, and have a real traffic plan ready before construction tears up the road. Families live with two lanes until 2029 — the wait shouldn't be more dangerous than it has to be.
2. Treat neighbors fairly when buying land. In 2027, the County starts buying strips of yards and frontage from people who live right on Highway N. Most of us signing don't own an inch of what's needed — this is about our neighbors. Tell affected owners early and in person, not by surprise letter. Pay a fair price backed by an honest, independent appraisal. Take as little land as the road actually needs. And give straight answers to those who don't want to sell at all.
3. Keep the dates — and say so if they move. Building is set for 2028, lanes open around 2029. Other projects in our region have slipped and even lost federal money by missing deadlines. If a date moves, tell the public promptly and explain why. Silence is what erodes trust; a straight answer never does.
4. Fund the other half. Only the eastern half of the announced four miles — Hopewell Road to Hawk Ridge Trail — has building money. The western half, Ebert Lane to Hopewell Road, has none yet. When does it get funded?
