The Issue

As a parent of two high school kids who have greatly benefited from a later start time, I implore our local school board to keep the current high school start time of 9:00 AM. My two older children have seen substantial improvements in their academic performance, mental well-being, and overall happiness because of this schedule. My youngest daughter will be starting high school soon, and I worry that an earlier start time would put her at a significant disadvantage, depriving her of the same benefits her siblings enjoyed.

Research consistently shows that later school start times align better with adolescent sleep patterns. A study by the American Academy of Pediatrics confirms that starting school later helps teenagers get the necessary amount of sleep, leading to improved concentration and academic performance. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also recommends that middle and high schools start at 8:30 AM or later to enhance students' health, safety, and academic success.

Moreover, psychological studies highlight that students who get adequate sleep have reduced risks of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. An earlier start time could exacerbate these issues, undermining students' ability to learn effectively and enjoy their high school experience.

The societal benefits of starting school later extend beyond individual students. Communities benefit from improved academic performance, reduced dropout rates, and overall better health outcomes, which can eventually lead to a more educated and healthier workforce.

While the argument for starting school earlier may revolve around scheduling convenience for parents and bus companies, we must prioritize students' holistic well-being and long-term success over short-term logistical concerns.

Therefore, I urge the school board to stand with parents, educators, and students in sustaining the 9:00 AM start time for high schools in our community. Let us champion our children's capacity to thrive, learn, and grow under conditions that best support their needs.

Please sign this petition to signal to the school board that we value our children's futures and that maintaining a 9:00 AM high school start time is imperative for their overall development and success. Your support can make a crucial difference. Sign now to stand with us in this essential cause.
