As parents of students in MTRSD, we are concerned with the shift at Mohawk High School to remove stand-alone honors courses from the curriculum as the whole school moves to a heterogeneous model. The result has been a lowering of expectations for all students, as classes move at a slower pace and fail to engage and challenge students who want more rigor. We would like to see higher expectations for homework and in-class experiences.

We ask the district and school administrators for specific adjustments planned and communicated with parents to be put in place next (2017-2018) school year to address this problem. We suggest creating multiple pathways for students to move at their levels of commitment and ability. More flexible scheduling would offer more choice to students, such as cross-grade level courses and choices to take courses in one instead of two semesters.

We support our public schools, and want them to provide experiences that reflect high expectations for all students. We believe that addressing this issue of concern ties to the foundational commitments of the MTRMSHS, and to the recent Mohawk BEST (Building Education Sustainability and Trust) Committee recommendation that the district should emphasize educational excellence and position MTRSD as the most attractive alternative in the region for students with a broad range of aspirations. It's the right thing to do for our kids, and for our communities.
