Keep Healthy Food Affordable: Stop Olive Oil Tariffs!
The Issue
It’s always in your pantry or has a permanent spot right next to your stove. It’s something you reach for all the time when you’re cooking.
Olive oil isn’t just an ingredient — it’s the foundation of dishes like pesto, hummus, focaccia, bruschetta, and vinaigrettes. Without it, you simply can’t make them.
The U.S. government must exclude olive oil from the new tariffs imposed on imported goods.
Tariffs on major olive oil–producing countries like Spain, Italy, and Greece will drive up prices on a product that is not just a culinary staple, but also essential to healthy diets for millions of Americans.
The reality is simple: the U.S. cannot produce nearly enough olive oil to meet domestic demand. We rely on imports for over 95% of our olive oil supply, with Europe accounting for the vast majority. These tariffs will directly lead to higher prices at grocery stores, markets, and restaurants nationwide.
Olive oil is rich in heart-healthy fats and antioxidants. It’s a key ingredient in the Mediterranean diet, which has been linked to lower risks of heart disease, stroke, and other chronic illnesses. Raising the price of olive oil through tariffs puts healthy eating further out of reach for families already struggling with rising food costs.
Small businesses will bear the brunt of this policy. Independent restaurants, local grocers, and specialty food shops rely on affordable, high-quality olive oil to provide customers and make essential dishes. Many of these businesses are still recovering from pandemic-era losses and cannot absorb yet another financial blow.
Without action, this damaging trade policy will restrict access to olive oil for families and thousands of businesses that depend on it.
The government must act now to exclude olive oil from these tariffs. Protect public health, support small businesses, and keep olive oil affordable for all!
