The Issue

I have been deeply involved in helping others primarily through the GroupMe SMS service. It's become a crucial tool in my daily communication, especially with those who rely on text messaging for their connectivity. As a developer, I frequently assist communities that depend heavily on SMS for their GroupMe interactions, which allows them to stay informed, connected, and organized without the need for data or smartphone capabilities.

Microsoft's recent announcement to discontinue the GroupMe SMS feature has left many of us concerned about the future of our communication methods. For individuals and communities that are not always connected to the internet or lack smartphones, SMS serves as a vital link. According to Pew Research Center, as of 2021, about 15% of American adults were still using basic mobile phones, and for many of these users, SMS is indispensable for their day-to-day operations.

Additionally, organizations such as non-profits, volunteer groups, and local networks rely on SMS to reach their members, ensuring everyone stays in the loop. Cutting off this lifeline could potentially isolate members, reduce participation, and hinder the success of community-driven activities.

A solution that could be considered is to allow a small fee-based or donation system to maintain SMS services, thereby covering operational costs while keeping the line of communication open for those who need it. Continued support for SMS communication ensures inclusivity and maintains the integrity of GroupMe's vast user network.

We urge Microsoft to reconsider their decision to discontinue GroupMe SMS, to embrace the diversity of their user base, and to recognize the importance of this service to countless individuals and communities around the world. Please join me in calling for the continuation of GroupMe SMS service by signing this petition.
