The Issue

Uniontown Area School District is considering closing Franklin Elementary School, the only educational institution in Franklin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. This school is not just a building; it's a cornerstone of our community's identity. Generations of families have passed through its doors, forging lifelong memories and receiving a solid foundational education. This decision threatens to unravel the very fabric of our township.

Closing Franklin Elementary would force our children to travel to Menallen School in Menallen Township. Not only would this result in increased transportation costs for families, but it would also create logistical nightmares for working parents trying to coordinate longer commutes. Furthermore, Menallen School would be pushed to a bustling 101% capacity, leaving no room for future growth. This grossly overpopulated environment compromises the quality of education and limits personal attention each student can receive - a basic right for our children.

Statistically, overcrowded schools lead to lower test scores, increased teacher burnout, and significant strain on existing resources. Evidence suggests that students taught in overcrowded environments experience more negative behaviors and lack the attention needed to excel academically.

The school board must recognize that Franklin Elementary is essential for sustainable growth and community prosperity. It is indispensable for accommodating future population growth within Franklin Township and Menallen Township and ensuring that each child receives the care and education they deserve.

Let’s work together to present a viable alternative to closing our beloved school. This includes restructuring proposals that consider long-term regional educational growth and engaging community stakeholders in crafting a strategic plan to keep Franklin Elementary open.

Join us in fighting for the future of Franklin Township’s children and safeguarding our community’s heritage. Sign this petition now to demand that the Uniontown School District keep Franklin Elementary School open. Your signature can help preserve a vital resource for generations to come.
