The Issue

Our community is being asked to accept the loss of a pedestrian path that has connected Ferndale Woods to Charlie Brown Park for more than 50 years. We should not accept this.

The path is a safe, direct, and essential connection used by generations of families, children, seniors, walkers, and bicyclists. Closing it on August 15 will turn a simple 0.3-mile walk into a 1.5-mile detour, forcing pedestrians and cyclists onto busy roads without sidewalks and no safe designated crossings.

This is not just an inconvenience. It is a safety issue.

The Village should not close a long-standing community connection without first working with residents to find a solution that preserves safe access. If there are concerns about the path or its use, they should be addressed through reasonable measures such as fencing, signage, lighting, maintenance, or other safety improvements—not by eliminating access altogether.

For more than five decades, this path has served our neighborhood. Our children deserve safe access to their park. Our seniors deserve a safe walking route. Our community deserves to remain connected.

We are asking local officials to:

✋ STOP THE AUGUST 15 CLOSURE.
🚶 KEEP THE PEDESTRIAN PATH OPEN.
🤝 WORK WITH RESIDENTS ON A SAFE, PERMANENT SOLUTION.

Please sign this petition and stand with Ferndale Woods residents.

Protect our path. Protect our children. Protect our community.

“Thank you for reaching out. I am aware of the petition and the concerns residents have raised regarding the Ferndale Woods Path. As a Village Trustee, I take the concerns of our residents seriously. This is an ongoing matter that the Village Board is actively addressing, and I believe it would be premature for me to provide a substantive response until the Board has had an opportunity to fully discuss the matter and determine the appropriate path forward. Thank you for bringing the residents' concerns to my attention. The above was an email response we received regarding this petition.]”
