After months of research, Safe Separations submitted a formal request to EPA Victoria urging them to introduce evidence-based setback reccommendations between petrol stations and homes, schools and childcare centres. We presented overwhelming scientific evidence linking petrol station emissions to serious health risks, including increased rates of childhood leukaemia within 50 metres of these sites.
The EPA’s response? A copy-paste email that completely ignored the data.
While states like WA and NT enforce clear minimum distances (50-100 metres) to protect public health, Victoria has none. Even EPA Victoria’s own guidelines set strict separation distances for industries like chemical storage and quarrying but somehow, petrol stations are exempt.
This isn’t just bureaucratic laziness, it’s a failure to protect Victorian families.
