On March 26, I sent a letter to John Wooley and Ken Wooley two of the folks involved with this new incarnation of Eastern. I wanted to share the letter that was sent.
March 26, 2018
John Woolley
Executive Vice President
Dynamic International Airways, LLC
Dear Mr. Woolley,
Attached to this email is a document with the names of 791 people from across America and around the world, asking that Swift consider a way of using the Eastern name. When a new version of Eastern airlines soared into the air in 2015, former employees and fans of the original Eastern who were excited to see a storied airline back in the air after a two decade absence. Many of us longed for the day when we could take an Eastern flight again. In 2017, after falling into financial difficulty, Eastern was acquired by Swift Air. Many of us were saddened to hear this, but we hoped that the new owner would keep the Eastern name going. The genesis of this petition was to ask Swift to find some way to use the Eastern name. On March 12, 2018, many of us learned the Dynamic International, announced it would rebrand Dynamic as Eastern. We are thankful that Swift, of which Dynamic CEO Ken Woolley also owns a substantial state, allowed Dynamic to use this historic name.
The legacy of both the original airline and its successor now rests with Dynamic. We the signers hope Dynamic will live up to the Eastern name. However, we do have some concerns and hope that Dynamic will deal with them so that this new Eastern will be a successful airline.
One of the things we have noticed is that there are no charter or scheduled flights to either Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic. Both places were important to the original Eastern, with San Juan becoming a hub for the airline. Many Puerto Ricans and Dominicans still have fond memories of that original airline and they relish the chance to fly on a plane the with the Eastern livery. We hope there will be flights to both places in the coming months as this new Eastern ramps up. These would be vital revenue streams for the airline since there is a steady stream of Puerto Ricans and Dominicans that fly between the United States and the respective islands.
Many of us were heartbroken when the original Eastern shut down in 1991 without warning. In talking with others, I know that this heartbreak remained with many for decades. We are heartbroken again last fall when we learned that the second iteration of Eastern was no more. We do not want to be heartbroken again. We do not want to carry that heartbreak for another twenty years or more. We want to see this third version of Eastern be successful, to become a major air carrier that will last for many As the current owners of this brand, we hope you will use the Eastern brand in a way that lives up to the tradition of Eastern. This means improving customer service which according to many travel sites is terrible. It is our hope that this is something you will work on.
Another thing we hope you will do is have an active social media presence with the Eastern name. The second Eastern had an active Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/easternairlinesgroup/ ) and Twitter account (https://twitter.com/FlyEastern ). We hope you will establish active social media accounts to keep people informed of the progress of the airline. A company with a good website and social media accounts will at the very least allow Eastern 3 to appear transparent which again is good for business.
We hope you will also talk with the former CEO of Eastern 2, Ed Wegel. He spent years trying to build this new Eastern and has experience working with the original Eastern. He will be a valuable asset.
There are questions of what will happen to the two 737s that were part of the Eastern 2’s fleet and have the Eastern livery. We love for them to be part of this new Eastern and maybe used for both international and domestic flights in the near future.
Finally, we hope you will not take the many fans of Eastern for granted. Most of us followed what was happening to Eastern 2, cheering them on and supporting them. We are your potential customers and it is vital that you engage and respect this group
If you have any questions or when you make a decision, please feel free to contact me. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this letter and the petition. We look forward to talking more in the future. We also look forward to the day we can board an Eastern jet to fly to our destination. Godspeed.
Sincerely,
Dennis Sanders
