On March 17, 2022, Superintendent Trevor Greene made an announcement that at the end of this school year, 2022, Discovery Lab School, in Yakima Washington, is going to be closed down to open an early education program. Discovery Lab currently educates grades 1-8.

I’m sure most people will agree that an early learning program in the Yakima school District is needed, however shutting down an existing school is not the answer.

The students of Discovery Lab go to school together and move through classes together from the first to eighth grade, all of elementary and middle school. The amount of time these kids have gone to school together has created a strong bonds with each other and the staff.

Shutting this school down would separate these kids and put the staff out of work. This is devastating on many levels. The students will all be forced to go to different schools, severing the bond that has been created. Teachers and staff members have been told they will be able to continue working with in  the Yakima School district.

We need to come together and let our voices be heard to save this school. Signing this petition is a strong way to let our Superintendent, Trevor Greene, know that we the community want to Keep Discovery Lab School School open and find an alternative to open the early learning program.
