Keep DC’s Public Golf Courses Out of Political Control

Keep DC’s Public Golf Courses Out of Political Control
The Issue
Washington D.C.'s public golf courses are more than just places to play. They are part of the city's history, its green space, and its community life. But now, their future is at risk.
The Trump administration has issued a notice of default to the nonprofit that manages East Potomac, Rock Creek, and Langston golf courses. This could open the door for the White House to take over the courses directly through the National Park Service, which reports to the Interior Department and the president.
No clear reason was given for the alleged default. Yet, if the lease is terminated, these public lands could be handed over to new operators without community input, transparency, or any guarantees that they will remain accessible and affordable for local residents.
These courses sit on federally owned land, including parts of the National Mall and Memorial Parks. They belong to all of us, not to any one president or political party.
We are calling on the National Park Service to:
- Reject any effort to use the lease process for political gain
- Ensure any management decisions about the golf courses are made with public transparency
- Guarantee that these courses remain community-focused, affordable, and protected as public spaces
Presidents come and go. Public lands must stay in public hands. Washington D.C. residents and visitors deserve recreational spaces that serve the people, not political agendas or private profit.
These courses have long served diverse communities, including youth programs, local retirees, and weekend players of every background. That legacy should not be undermined by quiet takeovers or closed-door decisions.
Sign this petition to demand that D.C.’s public golf courses remain public, and that any changes to their future are made with the people’s voice at the center.
