The Issue

Two years ago, Coach Clay Mauro made the decision to uproot his life and family from Las Vegas, Nevada, to the South Sound, specifically to take on a pivotal role at Peninsula High School. Enticed by becoming the full-time Social Studies teacher alongside his position as Head Coach for the Peninsula High School football team, Coach Mauro left his position at a 5A Nevada State ranked school where he was not only the Head Coach but also the VP of the Southern Nevada Football Coaches Association, to embark on what was supposed to be a fantastic opportunity for his family. Coach Mauro was excited for the ability to work with our historic school, players and students.
During his tenure, Coach Mauro has held 7 different teaching positions at the school due to the district's inability to provide him the full time teaching job. His willingness to do whatever it took to stay with PSD and coach his athletes is remarkable. From a long term substitute in Health and English, to taking over the ASL program last minute and with zero knowledge or lesson plans. Coach Mauro taught himself the language so that he could, in turn, educate the students and help them obtain college credits for the course. Over the course of 18 months, Coach has held out with the hope that the District would place him in a full time teaching position so that he could remain with PHS and his athletes.
Mauro has not only proven to be an exceptional coach but also a guiding light to countless students and athletes. His unwavering commitment to raising the academic standards for players and championing a modern approach to team athletics has forged a more united and purpose-driven team. Such dedication is rare, and it is imperative that we honor and retain talent like Coach Mauro.
However, despite his commendable contributions, the Peninsula School District has yet to fulfill their duty by granting him the full-time teaching position, along with the accompanying full-time hours and benefits. This oversight not only undermines the trust we place in administrative commitments but also jeopardizes the stability and future of Peninsula High School's athletics program. Coach Mauro can no longer bear the financial burden of not being paid full time teaching salary or benefits for his family. He has struggled with this for nearly 18 months and is at an impasse.
If the District fails to act swiftly, we risk losing Coach Mauro permanently so that he can obtain gainful employment outside of the school district so that he can support his family. This loss would be profoundly felt by the students, parents, and staff who have rallied together under his leadership. We urge the Peninsula School District to immediately address this issue, and rectify the situation by employing Coach Mauro in a full-time position with the commensurate benefits.
The future of Peninsula High School's athletics and the well-being of its students depend on this decisive action. Join us in advocating for fairness, integrity, and the future of our community's athletic spirit.
Sign this petition to support Coach Mauro and ensure the Peninsula School District fulfills its obligation to the athletes, students and community of PHS.
