The Issue
As someone who has been using social media since 2010, I find that the new features on most platforms can be quite confusing. This is especially so for those who have never used social media before. Facebook is one of the biggest names in the game, and there have been a lot of changes to the platform lately. Some big and some small.
In the last year, I started using social media more often. Through this experience, I have created several Facebook groups. Groups are pages that members can post in. This allows those with common interest to find each other's posts much more easily. It is a great way to raise awareness, find community events, and be involved with a group dedicated to something cherished by many. There are groups for gaming, petitions (like this one), and even fan pages.
These groups have to be moderated by volunteers due to spam and other abuse. With the rise of generative A.I. (artificial intelligence) tools that are available on the web, spammers and trolls have been able to ruin a good thing. In response to this, Meta removed group chats as a feature in Facebook groups.
Instead, they offer Messenger community chats. These are separate from the original groups and far more confusing than the original setup. I, along with those who have signed this online petition, believe that this change has been detrimental to the value of online communities who share a safe space on Facebook. I am calling for Meta to restore chats in Facebook groups. If you would like to see this happen, please sign and share this petition. Thank you for reading!
