My name is Jasly Fernanda García Delgadillo, and through this letter, I want to share what my life was like in Mexico, how I felt living there, and how my experience has been living in Canada.

First of all, Mexico is a very beautiful country, and I love it deeply. However, the life I had there was not always nice or safe. The most valuable thing I have from Mexico is my family, and although they didn’t always treat me well, I will always love them.

In Mexico, I lived through many difficult experiences. For example, when I was 8 years old, a man chased my cousin and me. When I was 10, my mom used to leave us alone, and I took care of my siblings. My older brother wasn’t mentally well, so I cared for the younger ones, cooking with the little we had: beans and tortillas. Sometimes, my mom would leave with her partner for days or weeks and leave us with only 500 pesos. There were times when my dad had to send us food through an app because my mom spent the money he gave us.

My dad was always a very present father—too good to be true—and we never lacked anything thanks to him. I am very grateful for everything he did.

I also remember that, since my mom wasn’t home, we almost didn’t go to school. In the mornings, I had to call my grandfather to see if he could take us, because I’ve always liked studying. These experiences made me strong and independent, although I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.

Despite everything, I also have fond memories of Mexico: my dog, my cousins, who were always there for me and still are. For them, I also give my best. However, I wouldn’t want to live in Mexico again because I don’t feel safe there. What’s happening in the streets where I used to live scares me, and I can’t see myself living there again.

On the other hand, my life in Canada has been very different. Here, I feel happy, protected, and at peace. Being with my siblings, closer than ever, and with my dad fills me with joy. Canada has given me many opportunities: a good education, valuable friendships, and life lessons that I treasure. It has taught me that life is not just sadness.

In Canada, I’ve learned new languages, discovered hobbies, and lived unforgettable moments with my friends. Having such good friends with whom I can share music, movies, and experiences has made me feel part of something special. That’s why, when we were told we might be deported, the first thing I thought about was my future, my family, and my friends.

Leaving all this would be very painful because now I feel that Canada is my home. This is where I want to live, study, and continue building my life.

Sincerely,

Jasly Fernanda García Delgadillo
