Keep Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 2 Lights on until 11 PM

Keep Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 2 Lights on until 11 PM
Why this petition matters
Pier 2 at Brooklyn Bridge Park has become home to hundreds if not thousands of pickleball players across New York City. As the only lit court in all 5 boroughs, players of all ages and demographics come to play after the sun sets. With daylight fading fast, it will become the only public location for weeknight play after 5 PM. This will cause more people to flock to Pier 2, which will extend the queues, and make it such that most people cannot play during the week.
Current plans are for the lights to shut off at 8 PM starting October 10th. If those plans stand, the already long queues will become even longer, as the window of time to play after work will be cut in half. Playing pickleball is not only a great way to be active after a long day at a desk, but the social interactions can become vital, especially for those who suffer from seasonal affective disorder. Without the lights, many players will only be able to play on weekends, compared to the several times a week they are accustomed to. This sport has helped to improve so many people's lives not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well. Don't let the winter take that away.
While some may think that the cold will deter players from playing, many communities have shoveled their courts, and played well into freezing temperatures. It is the lack of light that will be the biggest hinderance, and Pier 2 should explore extending the hours until winter truly sets in.
Sunlight is already fading before 7 PM. Winter is coming. If we can convince Pier 2 to keep the lights on longer for at least a few more weeks, it will make a huge difference for the thousands of pickleball players across the city.
