Because We Matter 501c3 has been located in Anacortes, WA for 21 years. We rescue animals who can’t return to the wild and serve them as caretakers and educators. Our mission is simple: rescuing animals and teaching their stories inspires conservation! 

In early 2022, we received a lawsuit by individuals whose intent is to shut us down, claiming that the animals are a nuisance and lower property values. At the same time, Skagit County shut down our educational tours indefinitely, cutting off our revenue to care for the animals.  This petition will go before Skagit County as direct evidence that our community supports Because We Matter Exotic Rescue and believes in what we do.

• Skagit County benefits from both the sanctuary rescue efforts and local revenue Because We Matter provides
• Skagit County should defer to USDA & professional zookeeping standards when considering permit conditions 

If we close, those who will suffer the most are the animals: they’re with us because their options are sanctuary or death. Most cannot be rehomed and none can be released. The pressure is real.
