Keep Basswood Elementary Safe

The Issue

We address you as parents of Basswood Elementary to emphasize that the safety of our children is our top priority and is not subject to negotiation. We want to make it clear that we firmly reject the construction of Studio 6 and demand accountability from those who granted permission for its construction next to Basswood Elementary School.

We are deeply concerned about the proximity of Studio 6 to our school. Our first major concern is that they do not conduct background checks, so known pedophiles/felons could be right next to a school. Additionally, these places are known to have a heavy police presence, so when police drive by, how will our kids concentrate and not be fearful?

Known drug/alcohol/cigarette littering is another concern. People will be walking right beside the school, disposing of things. We demand action to address these significant issues.

The closeness of potential criminals fills us parents with great unease, to the point of considering transferring our children to another school if this project goes ahead.

We understand that security measures may be implemented, but we firmly believe that for a criminal, there are no insurmountable barriers, as unfortunately evidenced by shootings nationwide. In summary, our stance is a resounding no to the construction of Project Study 6.

Questions directed to Fort Worth authorities:

1. Why were we as Basswood parents not notified about this project, despite claims that nearby businesses and communities were informed? Who is responsible for the lack of updated data in Keller ISD?

2. It is said that Fort Worth officials sent notifications to nearby businesses and communities. We as parents took it upon ourselves to inquire with some parents who live and work near this construction, such as Belterra Apartments, Western Station Apartments, Carrington Court Community, Carriage Hills, and some businesses like Pollo Regio and Donut Land, and they have informed us that they are not aware of this construction. Our question is: To whom were notifications of this construction sent? Why is there so much lack of information about it? Why were visual mediums like large signs not used to inform the community?

3. What are the proposed solutions to ensure the safety of our children? Who will bear the costs associated with these measures?

And to the owner of Studio 6 we pose the following questions:

1. What is your vision/expectation regarding the guests of your property, considering that the location of the studio does not seem suitable to attract tourist or passing clients?

2. Which direction will the hotel windows be facing? If they face the school, they must be bulletproof to prevent incidents like the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

3. As a parent, how would you respond if a similar project were to be built near your children's school, knowing that such establishments can attract dangerous individuals? If it doesn't bother you, why not build it next to your children's school and close to your home? Are you aware of recent crime cases on similar properties, such as the one that occurred on February 16 in Waxahachie?

Additional security measures:

In addition to our rejection and concerns about the construction of Project Study 6, should it proceed, we demand the implementation of additional measures to safeguard the safety of our children and the school community:

1. Construction of a barrier between the hotel and the school: We propose the installation of a physical barrier between the hotel and the school, the costs of which should be borne by the hotel, the city, or, failing that, the school district, without affecting the present or future budget of the school. This measure would help mitigate potential risks associated with the proximity of Studio 6.

2. Closure of access to the school's backyard: We request the closure of access to the school's backyard as an additional preventive measure to protect students from the entry of unknown individuals.

3. Preventive security: We request the assignment of a city police officer to provide preventive security services during all school days. Their patrol car should be parked in front of the school for easy identification and deterrence of potential threats.

4. Future shopping center: Regarding the future development of the area, we consider it unacceptable to install establishments focused on the sale of alcohol, tobacco, or adult products, such as liquor stores or tobacco shops. We advocate for measures that promote a safe and healthy environment for our community.

We await concrete responses and actions to ensure the safety of our children and our community.
