Keep ASL Interpreters!
Keep ASL Interpreters!
The Issue
Recently, PWCS has begun removing ASL teacher interpreters from our schools. This decision is concerning and would undoubtedly impact the efficiency of communication and learning within our ASL classes. The teachers interpreters are integral to our learning process; assisting in making learning efficient and helps us to grasp the nuances of the language and culture more effectively.
Not only will this make it exceedingly difficult for new signers to learn, it will also cause a severe risk. In any emergency where a student or the teacher cannot communicate with one another, the lack of a classroom interpreter can be dangerous.
The loss of teacher interpreters will only form a disconnect between the deaf teachers and students interested in learning the language.
We urge the PWC School Board to reconsider this decision and continue to let our interpreters assist in our learning process and aid our deaf teachers. Let us preserve the quality of ASL education in PWCS for current and future students. Please sign this petition to show your support and help us keep our teachers interpreters in our schools.
