This lady wasn’t kind—she was a straight-up control freak. Lockdowns for brekkie, lectures for lunch, guilt trips for dinner, delivered daily from the infamous “podium of truth”.

Her exact words: “We will continue to be your single source of truth… Unless you hear it from us, it is not the truth.” (Meaning: shut up, obey / don’t question me.)

She ran NZ like a personal fiefdom—OTT elimination strategy, borders slammed shut (once Rona was let in that is) 🙄 NZ endured one of the strictest initial lockdowns in the world (Alert Level 4 topped global stringency charts). We are thankful we had fewer total lockdown days than some (like Melbourne’s epic 112-day stretch), but while we were in the thick of it - it was brutal.

Then the wretched woman quit in 2023 and buggered off overseas, leaving us broke and broken.

Don’t believe me? Numbers don’t lie:

Net core Crown debt exploded under her watch—started low ~$59-60 billion (~20% GDP) in 2017, peaked around $150-175 billion (40%+ GDP) during the Covid years, with reports of ~$92 billion extra added. Gross debt doubled or more in spots. Australia? Your gross debt jumped too (from ~40% GDP pre-pandemic to ~57% peak, now ~48-50%), but NZ’s rise felt sharper relative to our tiny economy, and we’re still climbing while yours stabilised faster post-recovery.

We may have survived the tyranny, but we’re still paying the price—interest, inflation hangover, a divided nation - the lot.
