I am writing this petition out of a deep concern and personal connection to the heart of our community at Harmon Elementary School in Southwest, Columbus, OH. For the past few years, I have had the privilege of working with an extraordinary intervention specialist who not only excels in her professional capacities but also embodies the spirit and commitment our educational environment desperately needs.

She has formed strong relationships with families and has been a stable rock for students with special needs. Her unwavering dedication ensures that each child feels seen and supported, allowing them to reach their fullest potential. Her connections don’t just stop at the school yard; she is an integral part of our community, involved with school events, and a familiar face who builds trust not just with the students, but their families too.

Her presence is crucial, especially as we face a significant increase in students qualifying for intervention. Students thrive with consistent support, especially in small group settings. Current interventions work precisely because of familiarity and continuity. Changing the intervention specialists disrupts this delicate ecosystem, impacting student growth and well-being.

There is a real potential for harm if these specialists are removed or replaced. The bond between student and specialist is not easily replicated, and losing them would be a disservice to our community and, more critically, to the students who rely heavily on their guidance and compassion.

I'm calling upon our school administration and decision-makers to consider the invaluable role these specialists play and to keep all current intervention specialists at Harmon Elementary School. They are not just staff but pivotal players in our students’ academic and personal growth, ensuring all children in Southwest Columbus are given the fair chance they deserve to succeed.
