KEEP AI DATA CENTERS OUT OF FORT COLLINS
The Issue
Fort Collins City Council is currently considering new AI data center zoning regulations, despite the pressing concerns of residents that may have their lifestyle and health heavily affected by these structures.
Data centers create massive air, noise, and light pollution. Particularly gas-powered data centers, emit pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, methane, volatile organic compounds, and fine particulate matter. Noise levels go beyond 85 decibels, which is beyond what is considered harmful for life.
Water is a massive issue as well, when data centers can consume anywhere from 300,000 to 5,000,000 gallons of water PER DAY. While according to the U.S. drought monitor, almost 50% of Larimer County as of 07/23/26 is under EXTREME DROUGHT. 43% of our water is sourced from the Colorado River on the Western Slope, one of the most heavily drought affected regions in the world.
The City of Fort Collins is known for its natural beauty, historic downtown, and high livability thanks to our wonderful natural areas and commuter trails. If we are not willing to build more 5g towers because they are, "unsightly obstructions", how can we consider building something which will pose a far greater detriment to the local aesthetic and environment? We should continue to preserve our urban center for the people living in the city as we've done for so long, and not cut it up for big investors with no stake in our lives.
Our City is NON - NEGOTIABLE, and data centers harm the communities they enter. City Council must immediately dismiss any possible re-zoning considerations or inquires from developers looking to build AI infrastructure in Fort Collins.
